Premier League: Bruno Guimaraes officially joins Arsenal from Newcastle United

New Delhi: Bruno Guimaraes has officially joined from Newcastle United, the club has confirmed on Saturday, August 8. According to ESPN, the midfielder joined the reigning champions at a fee of £75 million ($101m) and has signed a four-year deal with the option for another season.

The 29-year-old has captained Newcastle to their first trophy since 1955 when they won the Carabao Cup last season. The Brazilian international had made it clear that he wanted to join Arsenal after meeting the club’s new manager, Matthias Jaissle, this week.

Arsenal have reportedly shown an interest in signing Guimaraes twice previously, first in 2020 when he was at the Brazilian club Athletico Paranaense and then 18 months later when he was playing for the French club Lyon and went on to move to Newcastle.

His arrival has significantly strengthened Arsenal’s midfield, which already has the likes of Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

‘I want to win trophies, I want to make history’

After joining the club, Guimaraes said that he felt from inside that he needed a new challenge in his life. The midfielder further added that he’s at the point in his life where he needed a challenge like this.

“Since the first time I spoke to Berta and Mikel, I was excited. I just felt inside of me that I need a new challenge in my life and I think to be an Arsenal player is going to be an exciting challenge in my life,” Guimaraes told Arsenal’s website.

“After playing two World Cups, I’m at the point of my life, I need a challenge like this. I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I’m in the right place to do it. I’m so excited to start. We have tough games to play this season, so the squad is going to be very, very important and I’m hopeful we can achieve our dreams,” he added.

Arsenal will open their Premier League 2026-27 campaign against Coventry City at the Emirates on Saturday, August 22.
