Andrew Flintoff quits England Lions head coach role, joins Sydney Thunder in BBL

New Delhi: Andrew Flintoff has resigned as head coach of the England Lions after almost two years in the role, ending his tenure with the country’s second-string side as he prepares to take charge of Big Bash League franchise Sydney Thunder.

The 48-year-old joined as England Lions head coach in September 2024 and played a crucial role in the development programme for some of the country’s leading young cricketers. The former England all-rounder said that he enjoyed the opportunity to work with the best young cricketers of the country.

“Unfortunately I’ve made the decision to step away from my role with the Lions. Not only have I enjoyed my time having the opportunity to work with the best young cricketers in the country, but have taken great pride in seeing them develop,” Flintoff said in a statement issued by the ECB.

Flintoff’s decision comes after he was appointed the head coach of Sydney Thunder and is due to start his new role later this year.

“I can’t wait to get started with the Thunder later in the year and see where coaching takes me,” Flintoff said.

The move marks another major step in Flintoff’s return to cricket following the serious injuries he sustained in a 2022 accident while filming the BBC television programme Top Gear. He had largely stayed away from cricket after retiring as a player before gradually returning to coaching and mentoring roles.

His exit leaves the Lions needing an interim coach ahead of their upcoming match against Pakistan Men. Mike Yardy will replace Flintoff for the four-day Professional County Club Select XI match against Pakistan Men, which starts at Beckenham on August 12.

England Men’s Performance Director praises Andrew Flintoff

England Men’s Performance Director Ed Barney praised Flintoff’s work with the Lions, saying that he has helped to transform the team’s environment into a programme that had a major impact on young players.

“Coaches have also flourished alongside him, whether early in their coaching journey or with decades of experience, and he has consistently maximised the expertise around the group,” Barney said.

Flintoff now shifts his focus to Sydney Thunder, where he will start his first head coach role in the Big Bash League.
