Mahua Moitra Fires Back Over Her Remarks on Suvendu Adhikari & Abhishek Banerjee

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra, one of the few elected leaders of the party to support former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, retaliated against what she called “juicy bits” taken from her recent media interviews to misquote her and “grab eyeballs.”

In a recent interview with the BBC, Mahua Moitra discussed the uprising by party TMC MLAs and MPs and emphasised her unwavering support for Mamata Banerjee while expressing appreciation for turncoat Suvendu Adhikari.

In response to inquiries about rebel MPs and MLAs citing Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee as the primary issue, Mahua Moitra stated that she respects Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari for leaving the TMC on amicable terms.

The Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency representative, Moitra, also said she remains close to Suvendu Adhikari, recalling a day in 2014 when he comforted her after she sobbed over not receiving a Lok Sabha ticket.

The issue that Suvendu Adhikari faced was basically the same. Abhishek Banerjee was ranked second in the party by Mamata Banerjee. Mahua Moitra stated in the BBC Hindi and Bangla interviews that “Suvendu understood that as long as Abhishek Banerjee was there, control of the party was never going to come to him.” She later clarified in a post on X that her remarks endorsing the chief minister had been misrepresented by reports claiming they had “sparked buzz.”

She remarked that it was Suvendu Adhikari’s right, his entitlement. She added that he also realised that as long as Abhishek was around, this would not happen. Thus, he decided to join the BJP. He was pretty clear about that stance. And there is value to that; there is something admirable about that strategy. Moitra questioned why the rebels remained mute about issues with the Diamond Harbour MP during the TMC’s victory in West Bengal, saying, “He went away and fought his political battle for five years.”

She clarified that a month or a month and a half ago, every individual was making such accusations. On the Trinamool Congress emblem, they were all engaged in combat. She added, “they all fought on the Trinamool Congress symbol.” Abhishek Banerjee was not made the party’s national general secretary today; he held the same position in 2021 as well. The party won the 2021 election under his leadership.”

Additionally, there was always room within the party to discuss disagreements with Mamata Banerjee or Abhishek Banerjee, Mahua Moitra said, adding that there was room for dissent. “I myself fought the 2024 election without involving I-PAC. So the problem was never that there was no space for discussion within the party,” she said, referring to the issues with the political consultancy firm cited by rebel leaders.
