As rising awareness of diabetes, obesity, and other lifestyle disorders forces consumers away from refined sugar, the global food industry is experiencing a massive shift towards natural, zero-calorie sweeteners. Monk fruit, originally cultivated for centuries in the mountainous regions of southern China, where traditional practitioners used it to treat sore throats, coughs, and fevers, is now the world’s most sought-after natural sweetener.
What is monk fruit?
Monk fruit (Siraitia grosvenorii) is a perennial vine from the gourd family, bearing small, round green fruits resembling tiny melons. What makes it extraordinary is its sweetness, which is 150 to 250 times sweeter than cane sugar. This intense sweetness comes from an antioxidant compound called mogroside-V. Despite its sugar-like taste, monk fruit contains no calories or carbohydrates, making it safe for diabetics and those on weight-loss journeys because it does not affect blood glucose levels.

Have it in moderation
Some monk fruit sugars in the market contain a compound called ‘erhythriotol’ a sugar alcohol. It can cause bloating, digestive issues, blood clotting and heart issues. Therefore, read the labels carefully to ensure the one you buy does not contain sugar alcohol.
