10-time WWE champion and UFC icon Brock Lesnar announces retirement

New Delhi: WWE and UFC icon Brock Lesnar announced his retirement from professional wrestling and “everything else” on Tuesday, August 04. One of the most popular WWE superstars of all time, Lesnar confirmed that he has decided to hang up his boots after his final appearance at WWE SummerSlam last week.

Lesnar confirmed his retirement during his appearance on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ on Tuesday. The 49-year-old said it was an emotional affair for him to go up against Oba Femi in what was his last appearance in WWE last week. The WWE legend said he felt done during the fight and thus decided it was time for him to retire.

“I’m here today to let the world know [that] I am retired. Saturday was a very emotional day for me. It was kind of weird. When Oba Femi slammed me at WrestleMania, I said, ‘I can’t do this anymore. I think I’m done.’ But the business [called], and I still had some fuel in the tank,” Lesnar said on the show, announcing his retirement.

“Saturday, for Brock Lesnar, that’s it. That’s it for me in the squared circle and everything else,” he added.

Lesnar revealed he wanted to retire after his appearance at WrestleMania earlier this year, where he removed his boots and gloves in the ring after his fight. However, he decided to continue and took part in a Hell in a Cell match against Oba Femi at the WWE SummerSlam last weekend.

Brock Lesnar’s illustrious career

Lesnar enjoyed an illustrious career in WWE and pro wrestling. He won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship ten times and also won the UFC heavyweight title in his career. He enjoyed a brief stint with the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL and became one of the most popular WWE icons of his generation.

Known for his devastating “F-5” finishing move, Lesnar signed his first professional wrestling contract in 2001 after winning the NCAA Division I national championship in wrestling while representing the University of Minnesota in 2000. He went on to win his first WWE World Heavyweight Championship title in 2002 after beating Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

Lesnar’s dominance in the WWE grew year on year as he established his credentials as one of the toughest fighters in the ring. He won the Royal Rumble in 2003 before leaving wrestling t pursue a short stint in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings in 2004. He returned to WWE and ended up winning the Royal Rumble again in 2022.

He also ended The Undertaker’s 21-match winning streak at WrestleMania. Lesnar transitioned to MMA in 2007 and won his first UFC heavyweight championship in 2008 after beating Randy Couture in what was his fourth bout in the competition.

He quit MMA in 2015, only to make a comeback at UFC 200 against Mark Hunt in 2016. He was later banned from the UFC after testing positive for a banned substance before his bout at UFC 200. He never returned to UFC after the controversy and decided to make his comeback in the WWE, where he enjoyed great success.

“I was just a farm kid from South Dakota with a big dream, a big heart and a big-ass chip on my shoulder. I am just grateful to be 49 years old and have been able to do what I did in this lifetime. I thank God and everybody that supported me,” Lesnar said in his parting message after announcing his retirement.
